Tasted in a vertical setting of 2015 through 2020, the 2020 Thick Skinned is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Malbec and only 1% Petit Verdot. Still a baby and set to be released at the end of 2024, it’s still incredibly tight and youthful but has good bones. Firm, bold, spicy and juicy, it’s like a puppy with big floppy ears and paws that will undoubtedly grow into its size. With plenty of hedonistic, juicy dark red fruit flavors and oak essences, this will be a knockout for years to come. Your patience will be rewarded.
Tasted in a vertical setting of 2015 through 2020, the 2019 Thick Skinned is over half Cabernet Sauvignon with a quarter Malbec and 15% Petit Verdot. The 2019 has some similarities with the 2018, yet it is still firm and tannic, offering a dusty and rustic nose that needs some time to fill its shoes. Full-bodied, spicy and fresh, the Cabernet blend should find its stride in about two years. Until then, it will have plenty of time to hit its cadence.

This is indeed a sweet wine. The wine also has plenty of acidity, so it has that going for it. Aromas of lemon tarts and 7-Up are a canary in the residual sugar coal mine. Flavors like lemon drop hard candies and a peach margarita continue the theme. The wine is sweet without hitting cloying territory.

Now in its proverbial third leaf (or the third vintage made), the Castello Banfi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto is a wine of rich concentration and dark fruit nuances. The bouquet is tight and powerful with all kinds of black cherry and wild currant aromas. The balance is good and so is the intensity of the primary fruit. Only the strong 15% alcohol content is out of place. This is a solid Brunello that will appeal to those who love the richer and more saturated side of Sangiovese. There is some sour cherry on the close, and the tannins would benefit from a few more years in the bottle.
Castello Banfi brings us this classic expression of the vintage. Their 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is hearty and dark with a level of distinguished power (with 15% alcohol) and sophistication that you only get with Brunello, a wine that by law ages for five years before its commercial release. Dark plum and blackcurrant segue seamlessly to spice, tar and black earth. The fruit ripeness is opulent and contrasted against elegant acidity and polished tannins. You don't need to wait long to enjoy.
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura (with 51,200 bottles made) shows balance and ripeness with a good combination of cherry, wild plum, blue flower, tobacco and sweet earth. The outlier is the 15% alcohol content. The wine is generous in texture and scope, yet it ultimately feels light and accessible to the palate. The tannins are well managed, but the wine's ample fruit weight feels supple and rich.
Few producers had the yields (and the courage!) to make a Riserva in this hot and, generally speaking, difficult vintage. The Castello Banfi 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio alle Mura (that pours from a heavy glass bottle) show ripe fruit over an open-knit texture. There is blackberry, baked plum, leather, tobacco and earth offered in thick and soft layers. This is a full-bodied Sangiovese with lasting fruit weight and moderate complexity. The finer nuances are set aside by the powerful 15.5% alcohol content found in this production.

This blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah shows a decadently soft side thanks to its aromas of black cherry, tobacco, chocolate and subtle spice. It delivers density and substance on the finish and would pair with pasta and creamy porcini sauce. – M.L. (10/1/2012)
The 2007 ExcelsuS is a gorgeous super Tuscan expression (with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) that shows quality and superior fruit on all levels. Castello Banfi has really hit a home run with this vintage. You’ll encounter persuasive aromas of cassis, blackberry, chocolate, tobacco, curry leaf and deep renderings of exotic spice. The wine’s texture is exceedingly smooth, rich and long lasting. – M.L. (10/1/2011)
Castello Banfi in Tuscany does a great job with Chardonnay, as evidenced by this wine. It’s rich and soft, with bright aromas of peach, citrus, vanilla and savory herb. A pinch of acidity on the finish works beautifully as well. – M.L. (10/1/2012)
A full and very juicy red, with loads of blackberry, toasty oak and intense coffee character. Very intense. Superb. Best after 2013.

2020 Thick Skinned Red Mountain | Wine Advocate | 93 pts |

2019 Thick Skinned Red Mountain | Wine Advocate | 93+ |
Tasted in a vertical setting of 2015 through 2020, the 2019 Thick Skinned is over half Cabernet Sauvignon with a quarter Malbec and 15% Petit Verdot. The 2019 has some similarities with the 2018, yet it is still firm and tannic, offering a dusty and rustic nose that needs some time to fill its shoes. Full-bodied, spicy and fresh, the Cabernet blend should find its stride in about two years. Until then, it will have plenty of time to hit its cadence. |

2018 Castello Banfi Vigna Marrucheto Brunello di Montalcino DOCG | Wine Enthusiast | 93 pts |
The nose blends sweet and savory, as notes of cherries, blackberries and vanilla sing above a treacly smear of soil, tar and balsamic vinegar. On the palate, the cherries grow sour and, along with a splash of blood orange pith, bring out the blackberries' tartness. Acidity and spice coil around tight tannins. |

2022 Pacific Rim Dry Riesling | Wine Enthusiast | BestBuy |
Crisp and fresh aromas of saline, lavender and chilled Asian pear slices are a nice start. Meyer lemon and grapefruit flavors are seasoned with spicy clove and ginger notes and a touch of pine needles. More acidity would be welcome, but overall an enjoyable wine. |

2022 Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling | Wine Enthusiast | BestBuy |
This is indeed a sweet wine. The wine also has plenty of acidity, so it has that going for it. Aromas of lemon tarts and 7-Up are a canary in the residual sugar coal mine. Flavors like lemon drop hard candies and a peach margarita continue the theme. The wine is sweet without hitting cloying territory. |

2021 Centine Pinot Grigio Toscana IGT | Wine Enthusiast | 90, BestBuy |
The nose is delicate, with notes of toasted almonds, quince paste and citrus blossoms. That delicacy continues on the slick palate, where the citrus and quince are joined by melon to keep lounging in the sun, but the nuttiness returns on the finish to lend a balancing astringency. |

2022 Rainstorm Pinot Gris | Wine Enthusiast | BestBuy |
Aromas of lemon-scented candle wax and spicy gypsy peppers collide with the earthy aroma of petrichor after a good summer rainstorm. Talk about a Rainsong. Lemon zest and pine needle make up the lion's share of the flavors, with nice acidity backing them up. |
September 12, 2023 |
2018 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG | Wine Enthusiast | 93 pts |
The nose leans sweet, with notes of vanilla, cherry and cola, but undertones of citrus, cloves, fennel, salt and pepper playfully poke holes in that sweetness. On the palate, raspberries provide reinforcements, but polished tannins and aggressive acidity maintain balance. |
September 12, 2023 |
2022 Pacific Rim Riesling | Wine Enthusiast | BestBuy |
The wine's primary aroma of pineapples and wet rocks is joined by a trace of something smoky, like a roaring campfire at the beach. Peaches and lemon-lime soda pop flavors are tempered by a bit of orange zest. This off-dry Riesling is need of a bit more acidity. |
September 12, 2023 |
2020 Castello Banfi Fontanelle Chardonnay IGT | Wine Enthusiast | 90 pts |
The nose has a crackly, unusual sweetness, with notes of buttery popcorn, marzipan, hazelnuts and candied lemon peel. The butteriness gives the palate a creamy mouthfeel, but sour, astringent undertones of citrus keep the sweeter flavors from languishing. |

2018 Vigna Marrucheto Brunello di Montalcino DOCG | Wine Advocate | 94 pts |

2018 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG | Wine Advocate | 93 pts |
Castello Banfi brings us this classic expression of the vintage. Their 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is hearty and dark with a level of distinguished power (with 15% alcohol) and sophistication that you only get with Brunello, a wine that by law ages for five years before its commercial release. Dark plum and blackcurrant segue seamlessly to spice, tar and black earth. The fruit ripeness is opulent and contrasted against elegant acidity and polished tannins. 2018 Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino DOCG | Wine Advocate | 94 pts |

2017 Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG | Wine Advocate | 93 pts |
